Horror Story

Vikram Bhatt has been making not only horror movies but successful horror films, in quick succession. His brand (as director or producer) is enough to draw horror lovers to cinema halls. But his movies are instinctively compared to his previous ones and the audience expects a certain standard from him.
Horror Story had good potential to deliver an eerie experience. But it doesn’t have staying power. One reason is, the entire film is restricted to a hotel and once the seven protagonists check in, there’s no one else. Second, although the writing is interesting, it is irksome to watch the seven protagonists visiting the same places again and again.
The film therefore has the same faces throughout. It thus turns into a tedious experience and you lose interest. Also, you fail to understand why the ghost plays hide-and-seek with the hotel guests instead of just killing them in one go. And why does it attack only when the victim is alone? These questions pepper your journey through the film and eventually detach you from the experience.
The film is about seven friends, youngsters, who don’t believe in the paranormal, so they decide to visit a haunted hotel. After checking in, they start witnessing and experiencing some weird stuff and one after another, they start getting killed. How many of them can outwit the spirit and stay alive is what this film is all about.
The film starts very well but, as mentioned earlier, you soon feel the proceedings are repetitive. Sometimes, the youngsters are shown brave and very next moment they are scared. Also, the occasional presence of a nurse is confusing.
But there are some brilliantly executed scenes but, then, that’s the problem – they are only a handful. Also, unlike other Bhatt movies, this film doesn’t have any songs or steamy scenes, which again goes against the taste of horror-lovers.
The debutante director shows his competence but only in a few scenes. Background score, which is so essential to any horror movie, is disappointing. Although the run time of the film is under two hours, editing could have been much better. Dialogue is all right.
Performance-wise, the best among the boys is Hasan Zaidi and among the girls is Nandini Vaid. Karan Kundra is good and so is Ravish Desai. The others are just about okay.
Verdict: Although made on a stipulated budget and with barely any money spent on promotion, the film will still find it tough to recover its investment.

Rahul (Jagrat Desai) and Pooja (Sasha Goradia) are newlyweds. They are on their flight to their honeymoon to Shimla. Amongst other passengers, also travelling with them is Jai (Vinay Pathak), who is on his way to rescue his lady love Muskaan (Riya Sen) from settling for an arranged marriage. However, things take an ugly turn when the wedded couple gets into an ugly brawl that forces the captain to return back to the airport.
A furious Jai then threatens Rahul and Pooja to reach him to Shimla by hook or by crook. Soon he is forced to travel to Shimla by road with Rahul and Pooja, who own a trailer. But after witnessing what marriage did to the couple, Jai has a change of heart and refuses to marry Muskaan. How the couples handle their thorny relationships forms the crux of the story. Deepa Sahi, who is making her directorial debut, fails to capture the story on celluloid. She simply does not execute it. This film is flops in every department, from writing to execution to music to background score to editing. There are simply too many sub-plots to this 120-minute tale. Dialogue is clichéd. Cinematography is mediocre.
The funny situations are not hilarious enough to tickle the funny bone and they get to be irksome. For instance, Rahul and Pooja angrily tossing around utensils in their trailer is over the top. Having failed to capture your attention at all, the film begins to drag even before the interval and feel like fleeing well before the end.
Performance-wise, Jagrat Desai and Sasha Goradia need to take an acting course. Riya Sen is animated but fails to emote. Vinay Pathak is his usual self and impresses but not consistently. The rest of the cast lends adequate support.
Rajjo

Rajjo marries Chandu and sets out to live a simple life. Simultaneously, Nagpada is in the clutches of re-development and the dancers and singers are under the shadow of this potential danger. Rajjo and Chandu have to deal with Hande Bhau (Prakash Raj), a corporate biggie with powerful political connections who has his eye on Rajjo. With everything working against them, how Rajjo and Chandu manage to live a well-balanced life forms the crux of the story.
This is an honest attempt from first-time director Vishwas Patil but had he concentrated more on writing, the film would have turned out quite different. Also, despite being a first-time director, Patil has managed to extract some good performances. The script is weak, lacks conviction and falls flat.
A film like Rajjo calls for powerful dialogue, which is patchy and breaks the flow of the film. Take, for instance, the scene where Rajjo and Chandu meet for the first time. Love blossoms but the sentiments fail to connect. The characters too have not been fleshed out adequately and fail to draw you in. For instance, when Rajjo is persuaded by Chandu to marry him and they plan to run away, Begum’s reaction is devoid of any restraint which is unlikely for her character.
Background score is average. Editing by Rakesh Rao could have been sharper. Many scenes start and end without any relevance to the screenplay. Cinematography by Binod Pradhan is okay. Locations and costumes are apt. The major drawback of this film is that its first half is much too slow and it is only post-interval that the story picks up. However, it loses its swiftness after a few scenes. Every scene before the interval is a drag and there is ample scope for crisp editing. Music is good but the lyrics are a letdown.
The drama isn’t convincing and is over-the-top, and the emotions portrayed fail to engage the audience. Sure, there are a few moments worth watching but they are too few.
Performance-wise, Kangna Ranaut gets into the skin of her character and is the only draw in this film. Paras Arora is average and needs to brush up on his emoting skills. Mahesh Manjrekar’s body language and dialogue delivery as a eunuch is just about okay. Prakash Raj plays his part with flamboyance. Even though Dalip Tahil’s character lacks explanation, he does justice to his part. Jaya Prada in a special appearance is noteworthy. The rest of the cast supports well.

Don't be shocked if you happen to come across our ownPriyamani, looking younger than ever in a casual tops and pant, caressing a huge lion which has its head on the actress' lap. These photographs have suddenly appeared on many social networking sites.
Priyamani, whose only hit film this year was the super-duper Hindi hit Chennai Express wherein she danced for an 'item number' along with Shak Rukh Khan, is presently holidaying along with her family and friends at the sandy beaches of Bangkok.
The actress, said to be an animal lover, visited the Tiger Temple (which is a major attraction for tourists at this time of the year). She displayed lot of courage in putting a tiger on her lap and posing for photographs which she later put on her Facebook account.

Thala-Thalapathy fan bases boost business

While it’s a known fact that the box office rejoices with each Thala and Thalapathy release, it’s not the only beneficiary from every new Vijay or Ajith film. The usually dormant music business is nourished by such high profile releases.
Despite the advent of the digital revolution, the physical CD sales of Thalaivaa and Arrambam this year have been extremely healthy and it is purely a result of the Thala-Thalapathy fan bases which throng to stores to own a copy of their idol’s album.
The day Veeram’s audio was released, Coimbatore Ajith fans held an audio release function of their own at Archana Theatre. Madurai also witnessed scenes like it was a first day first show with Vijay fans and Ajith fans engaging in extravagant celebrations.
With the music of Veeram and Jilla arriving in quick succession the music industry is cherishing the fact that 2013 is ending on a high. Popular stores in Chennai and Pondicherry have seen huge demands for both the albums. According to sources in the Landmark store, the pre-release demand of both albums had required them to place fresh orders, which too found takers almost immediately.
The store manager of Tic Tac, a popular audio outlet in Pondy, points out that the sales have been driven by particular songs from each album. He says“Ajith’s intro song ‘Nallavannu Solvaanga’ from Veeram has become a hit amongst the fans and likewise ‘Kandangi’ sung in Vijay’s own voice has won over his legions of fans”.
An official from Junglee music, label for Veeram, has revealed that the tracks have been performing exceptionally well in the mobile downloads space as well recording close to 800 downloads a day with ‘Nallavannu Solvaanga’ leading the pack and ‘Ratha Gaja’ coming in second.
Talking about the response to Jilla’s audio to Behindwoods, composer Imman said “I want to thank all the Vijay fans for the love they have shown for the music. I was a bit nervous in the beginning to make Vijay sing a melody fearing if his fans would be open to the idea but now I’m jubilant seeing the way ‘Kandangi’ has been received. Not just ‘Kandangi’ but even the other melody ‘Verasa Pogailye’ has gone down well with the masses.”
When asked if he was surprised how well the melodies have gained acceptance Imman offered his take by saying, “After Kumki’s success I decided to stick to my strength in melodies despite Jilla being a mass entertainer because I believe that melodies always win and it will always stand the test of time, and it also promotes quality music. Vijay too has been very happy with the music and he invited me over to his place after the audio release and congratulated me. There’s a lot of positive vibes around this film now and I’m happy to know that my music has played its part in it.”
Jilla director, Neason, told Behindwoods that he was always confident that ‘Kandangi’ would be a sure shot hit and he felt that Vijay’s cute dance moves, choreographed by Dinesh master, for ‘Verasa Pogailye’ would make for another winner but he feels that each subsequent listen to the album would fetch a new favorite song. About Vijay’s dance moves in the other songs Neason said “Both ‘Jingunamani’ and ‘Eppo Mama Treat’ will be a festival for Vijay fans and we are certain that it will have people dancing along in the theatres.”
Director of Veeram, Siva, expressed his gladness over the fact that album was declared a hit straightaway upon release. He said that he’s been travelling in buses and autos to get a sense of the reach of the songs and is pleased with the fact that the music has been spread evenly across various classes.
“I set out to make a film for the whole family and the same approach implied for the music as well, and that was my brief to DSP. He and his team have worked hard day and night along with lyricist Viveka to ensure that the songs could be enjoyed by people of all ages. The visual highpoints for the songs would undoubtedly be Ajith, as he’s danced like never before. He performed with a level of happiness that encapsulates the entire tone of the film.”, said Siva.
Lyricist Viveka said he received clear cut instructions while writing Ajith’s intro song in Veeram, “I did have Ajith’s fans in mind while writing the song but I was told clearly not to use any ‘Thala’ references or any lines that bordered around overpraise. I’ve written for an Ajith film long after my debut ‘Nee Varuvayenna’ and the response has been overwhelming with fans sending me a lot of goodwill messages. ”
Apart from contributing to all the tracks in Veeram, Viveka has also written three tunes in Vijay’s Jilla, “I had written quite a few hit songs for Vijay such as ‘Daddy Mummy’ and with tracks like ‘Jingunamani’ and ‘Yeppo Mama Treatu’ you could say that such commercial numbers is a specialty of mine. ‘Jingunamani’ especially got Vijay’s attention and he told me that the song would take off big time with the masses.”
It is after several years that Vijay and Ajith albums have arrived at almost the same time and both the soundtracks have achieved to set the film’s agenda straight. They have also managed to go a step further and provide musical moments which have fueled the films expectations even further.

When we got in touch with the Settai director, he said "I have been receiving many calls from friends mistaking that I was directing the movie. Please note that Naan Thaan Bala is not my movie. It belongs to another director by the same name. Please do not get confused"

STR has sung a song for the movie, Mahabalipuram, produced by Vinayak. The producer, himself, plays the lead in the movie. The movie is directed by Don Sandy, a former assistant of Director Boopathy Pandian.
Yugabharathi pens lyrics, for the music of K, who had earlier composed music for Mugamoodi and Yudham Sei. The song, sung by STR, reportedly, is a New Year Song and is expected to be released on the New Year day.
Ilamai Itho Itho from Sakalakala Vallavan has been Tamil Nadu’s New Year song for almost two decades. Will this new song replace it? We will have to wait and see.
