There is going to be a big box office battle in Tamil Nadu from 20 December.
Two Tamil films and one Hindi film are set to hit screens this Friday. Let us take a look at few details like cast, crew and screen count of the films, which are gearing up for a big clash at the TN box office.
Biriyani
Karthi starrer "Biriyani" carries huge expectations as it is a Venkat Prabhu directorial.
The film is a black comedy thriller, a genre that is trending in Tamil film industry. Films such as "Soodhu Kavvum" and "Moodar Koodam", which belong to the black comedy genre, have not only been critically acclaimed but also commercially successful.
These films had lesser known actors and debutants as directors, but still managed to hit the jackpot at the box office with its good content. "Biriyani" has a big star cast in the likes of Karthi and Hansika Motwani. Moreover, the film is directed by Venkat Prabhu who has a good number of hit films under his belt.
Expectations have hit fever pitch as "Biriyani" is gearing up for release on 20 December. The film is produced by K. E. Gnanavel Raja under his Studio Green banner. The popular banner is releasing the comedy thriller flick in more than 1,000 screens worldwide. The Telugu version of the film will also be releasing on 20 December.
"Biriyani" has been given "U/A" certificate as the film contained adult theme. The film's producer initially went to the revision committee to get a "U" certificate to enjoy the benefit of entertainment tax exemption, but the committee rejected the appeal and awarded the film with "U/A" rating.
The stylish thriller will have Karthi appearing in the role of a playboy, while Premgi Amaren dons the role of his childhood friend. Hansika reportedly plays a journalist and veteran actor Ramki is making his comeback in a significant role.
The film's story is about how Karthi's life changes after eating a plate of "Biriyani."
Music composer Yuvan Shankar Raja has composed the songs. "Biriyani" is a special film for the composer as it is his 100th album.
The Karthi starrer is expected to take a good opening upon its release. However, it remains to be seen if the film will be able to impress the audience and perform well at the box office.

Endrendrum Punnagai
Actor Jiiva's "Endrendrum Punngai" is another new release set to hit the screens on 20 December.
The film, directed by Ahmed of "Vaamanan" fame, belongs to the romantic comedy genre.
"Endrendrum Punngai" has a huge star cast including Jiiva, Vinay, Santhanam, Trisha and Andrea. In the recent years, Tamil film industry has been witnessing several romantic comedy entertainers hitting theatres.
Many of such movies have turned out to be huge hits. Although this genre has been tried and tested several times, the fact that it still attracts audience cannot be denied.
"Endrendrum Punnagai" is also expected to bring in more audience to theatres. The film reportedly deals with father-son relationship, friendship and love.
The Jiiva starrer has got a "U/A" certificate as the film contains a few adult comedy scenes.
The film is produced by G.K.M. Tamil Kumaran and Dr. Ramadoss, while Red Giants' Udhayanidhi Stalin is distributing the film in a big way.
According to Udhayanidhi, "Endrendrum Punnagai" will be releasing in around 260 screens in Tamil Nadu.
The romantic comedy film will have music by Harris Jayaraj.

Dhoom 3
Aamir Khan's "Dhoom 3" is generating a lot of buzz in Tamil Nadu. The "Dhoom" franchise is quite popular in the state and the fact that Aamir is playing the antagonist role in the third installment has raised the expectations for the film.
Besides Aamir Khan, "Dhoom 3" has Katrina Kaif, Abhishek Bachchan and Uday Chopra in significant roles.
The action thriller film, directed by Vijay Krishna Acharya, is all set to have a grand release on 20 December. The film is releasing in record number of screens in south India - 850 screens. Particularly in Tamil Nadu, "Dhoom 3" will be shown in around 150 screens.
Advance booking for the film has already begun and has been receiving fantastic response from fans.
"Dhoom 3" is expected to take a phenomenal opening on its release and is expected to give a tough competition to Tamil releases - "Biriyani" and "Endrendrum Punnagai."
The success of Hindi films like "Chennai Express" and "Krrish 3" have opened the market for Bollywood biggies in Tamil Nadu. Although the pre-release buzz for "Dhoom 3" is positive, one needs to wait a little longer to find out whether the film will be able to break records set by "Krrish 3" and "Chennai Express."
The Tamil and Telugu version of "Dhoom 3" will be hitting screens simultaneously with the Hindi version.
The film's music is composed by Pritam Chakraborty and its background score is handled by Julius Packiam. Aditya Chopra has produced the film under his Yash Raj Films banner.
